Prestige 2013

The Canadian Asian International Students’ Association (CAISA) is delighted to present its 15th annual fashion show – Prestige, which will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Centennial Hall (550 Wellington Street).

Drawing a crowd of over 1,500 attendees, CAISA Fashion Show is one of the largest student-run charity fashion shows in Ontario. Prestige will be pushing creative boundaries with a number of unique acts, on-stage illusions in the ‘House of Magic’, and a roster of independent designers who will debut their custom collections on the runway.

With over $100,000 donated to the charity, CAISA Fashion Show is thrilled to continue its partnership with Children’s Health Foundation for the ninth year. This year, the funds will support the Opportunity to Participate program at the Thames Valley Children’s Centre (TVCC).  The program helps youths explore their abilities and interests in art, sport, recreation, or leisure, which provide children with the experience, practical skills, and confidence to carry forward to their life of success and fulfillment.

Chop it off. We no longer need our long, thick hair to keep our ears warm so why not do something different. Short hair is not only cute heading into the warmer months but also requires less maintenance.

5-Minute Makeup Tips

Let’s face it – the demands of being a student doesn’t allow for much sleep. The goal of a five-minute make up routine is to look polished and well rested. Thanks to Studio H, here are some quick and easy makeup tips that will help you get out of the door looking like you woke up on time.

1) SKIN
Start with a tinted moisturized with SPF, then add a light reflecting foundation to even out skin tone and concealer to brighten up tired-looking skin and cover minor imperfections.
Focus on fresh skin and subtle cheeks. Apply blush on the apples of your cheeks and high points of your cheekbones. Hello flawless complexion!

2) EYES
Your eyes are the key to looking refreshed and awake; Keep your eye makeup neutral, soft, and subtle. Begin with concealer underneath your eyes to get rid of any dark circles, making your eyes look bigger, brighter, and less tired. Trace your lids with a  liner for more depth and dimension. Curl your lashes, and finish up with mascara. Hold the wand vertically and do a zigzag motion with the brush to separate your lashes.

3) LIPS
Choose a lip colour that will enhance your natural lip colour; try lipstick of nude or pinkish hues for a more natural colour. Top off your look with lip-gloss to brighten up your look and add depth to your lips!

Quick and Easy Hairstyles

It’s that time of year – where we have an exam tomorrow, assignment due tonight, and a ten-paged paper due at the end of the week. And sometimes, we need some chic cheats for our hairdo, especially if you’re running late to Prestige 2013. So, we talked to the professionals at Studio H London for some tips of the trade.

Student hairstyles are all about looking great with little effort. From long hair to short hair, here are a few hairstyles that can done simply with a few bobby pins and a hair tie, leaving you with just enough time to review your notes and run to class!

Studio H Beachy Waves

1) BEACHY WAVES
You can achieve classic beach waves by simply wrapping random strands of hair around the barrel of a curling iron. Do not clamp the curling iron; instead hold the ends of your hair wrapped around the iron for 20-30 seconds. Spray your entire head with a light hairspray, then run your fingers through your hair for a tousled and relaxed look.
Screen Shot 2013-03-15 at 1.10.36 PM

2) MESSY BUN
The messy bun is a staple for most university girls because it’s fast and effortless. In fact, it looks quite cute for as long as you don’t look like you just rolled out of bed. Gather all of your hair and wrap a hair tie around it a few times, depending on the thickness of your hair. Now you can shape the bun by taking the ends and looping them into the hair tie, securing them in place with bobby pins. Run your fingers through some strands for a messier look, and finish off with hairspray to keep it in place.

3) LOOSE SIDE BRAID

Tease random strand of hair in the crown to add more volume. Gather all your hair to one side so that it covers most of the ear. You can leave some hair falling out in the front if it’s not long enough for a more natural look. Start plaiting your braid – but do it loosely. Finish off your braid, and tie it at the ends. Gently pull on the sides of the braid for a messy and fuller look.

Meet Ashley Ching!

I caught up with the lovely makeup artist Ashley Ching to talk about her and her involvement with CAISA Fashion Show.

DP

How did you start doing makeup?

In grade 9, I had this friend who was extremely beautiful. One day, I saw her without makeup and was in awe of the power of makeup to transform a person. To this day I still believe that makeup is art; it will not change who you are. It only helps to enhance what you already have and make you feel more confident.

How you started making videos on Youtube?

It all started with me making a video to teach my friend how to do her makeup to improve her confidence with talking to a guy! A few friends suggested that I make the video public, so I posted it on Facebook and Youtube. The hundreds of views that began pouring in surprised me, and I decided to keep going and see what happens.

How did Youtube become so successful and what were some difficulties?

There was a point when I was confused about the direction I was going in. There were critical comments that sometimes accused me of being too similar to other artists. I decided to take that criticism constructively; I bought better video equipment, spent more time editing the videos, and found a style that made me distinct from other makeup gurus. I spend up to three hours creating the videos and two hours uploading, and that effort has definitely paid off.

What are some of your endeavors other than Youtube?

I did a lot of weddings and photoshoots. This summer, I’m going to makeup school to become a certified makeup artist. This is a big step towards the direction of my dream, and I’m very excited for it.

How did you become involved with CFS?

I was actually a model manager with CFS last year, and I was able to put my skills to good use with last year’s show. However, now that I know that I want to focus on make-up art, I’m focusing my efforts on just that.

What are you contributing to CFS this year?

I’ve done makeup for the American Apparel mini-shoots as well as the lookbook photoshoots for three scenes. I’m excited to be doing some work for the main show when the day draws closer!

What is your favourite thing about working with CFS?

It’s definitely the people that I get to work with. The CFS team makes you feel good about working, and seeing how dedicated they are to their work is very inspiring.

Finally, who is someone you look up to?

I’d have to say Ashlee Firsten, creator of Aromachology. She was an engineering student who graduated in 2003. I’ve never met her, but her professor talked about her all the time. When I think ofher and how she started her own business, I remember that you can achieve anything.

Keep up with Ashley:

Dress for Success!

Spring is coming faster and faster everyday which unfortunately means that as students, we need to find jobs. We choose some great finds that will be sure to dazzle your boss at the interview.

A blazer is a sure fire hit to know that your serious about the job. Blazers may be an investment but you can sport them at school, the office or even when your having a night out. American Apparel has a lightweight blazer that comes in tons of colour to let you get down to business.
